I told my wife, "I'm going to play you a song, then I'm going to cry, and then we can talk about it. That is what exactly what happened. The verse about being broken is a punch in the soul.
I was a mariner most of my life and as a result of that, and a tumultuous childhood, I have a lot of deep seeded emotional baggage. I don't feel like I was a great husband or father and am of the age where men didn't discuss their feelings. The devil will get his due and all of that stuff will bubble to the surface in one way or the other. This song is a release valve I never knew I needed.
To me, the song is the ballad of an empty nester, with regrets. Though I'm sure other people see themselves in the song for other reasons.

My mind is more at peace now, but my heart is still very much at war with you. Every once and a while I thought I cut far enough that you'd not come back, but I still feel the decay flare up every once and a while.
