Sara Ahmed is a brilliant educator tha we can all learn a ton from. I got a chance to chat with her for a little while at NCTE last fall in St. Louis, and I was blown away.

My one quesion for Sara: Can literacy drive social change? You are going to want to hear what she had to say on the topic.

Hey Sara - I feel like listening happens everywhere. I'm listening to them as we confer, of course. But I'm also listening when they don't know I am, like I eavesdropped on a table today as some girls in my fourth hour debated the merits of a book that 3 of the 4 of them had read (and were trying to get the 4th to read). I listen to them in the halls during passing periods as they tell me about their day. And I listen to them when they come to me after school, sometimes over hard stories. Best part of my job is listening to the kids.

Love Sara! Can’t wait to chat with her at nErDCampMI!
Listening means STOPPING what you are doing, ASKING the meaningful questions, HEARING the answer and RESPONDING appropriately, even if that means more listening and giving up the lesson.
