Oooo I did a simular mishap happen to me back in 2008 an initscripts update completely hosed my system; I had no form of networking at all, and nothing I did would help; so I ended up having to reinstall.

Thats one of the major bad things about Arch; stuff CAN break and when it breaks it breaks hard. "Bleeding edge" really shouldn't be used for a daily based system desktop or server system. Gentoo, Debian Sid, OpenSuse "Tumbleweed" and "Factory", etc are 'safer' types of bleeding edge. ;)

It took some work using a combination of backports and Sid repos, but I was finally able to update Iceweasel to the latest version, install Openshot 1.4.2, VLC 2.01, and Blender 2.63 without actually upgrading to Sid or Wheezy. Couldn't get Kdenlive to update past 0.7.8, but that version seems to be running fine. Need to create a link to Blender in the start menu though.

Still working on Gimp 2.8 and a couple of other things.

Compiz is working as is Docky, but having problems with Conky.

It might very well give you more trouble but I would like to see how you get on with Unstable :) It would be interesting to see what problems you encounter and how you solve them.

I did an update on my OpenSuse 12.1 and it died! Kernel was corrupted (or as it says, not found!) I want to try Debian and so this series is most welcome, Thank you.

Please run Sid. I'm running stable now, but plan to upgrade to Wheezy or Sid soon because the latest version of the apps I use aren't available in the stable repository. So I have been using the backports and testing repositories to get the updates. I figured that I may as well do a dist upgrade to get the latest kernel and base.

Could you unlock Sid/Wheezy and use it only long enough to update specific apps (like Gimp 2.8, VLC 2.03, etc.) without updating Deb Stable to Sid or Wheezy? I am looking for a rock solid Linux Distro for a work station and Debian looks like a good choice for me since I'm familiar with the Buntu way of doing things. Can't actually use a Buntu distro though due to incompatibilities they have with NTFS on my SATA controller (it will be a dual boot with Win 7)..

Well, it doesn't work. You essentially have to upgrade Debian to install the versions of those apps that aren't in Stable.

Now I need to decide if I should go for Unstable or Testing. It's always something, isn't it.

You were somewhat downbeat in this episode.
Let's see what SID has in store for us.
