Life in general is the greatest show on earth, that's what the song is about. Not their show;)...

As a mathematician with a deep love of music theory: yes it totally makes sense. Tuomas has an astounding understanding of sound and music. I think great composers understand how a performance plays out in the minds of listeners. They're not orchestrating a band or a show for us, those are just the tools they use. They are conducting us.

Tuomas has the whole record in his mind when he composes, not just a song. There are some videos about the recording process of "Endless forms more beautiful", he basically "hears" all the instruments and vocal parts in his head, like a painter sees a finished picture. Then he makes some basic demo versions to share with the rest of the band and they start rehearsing. If a member of the band suggests a better idea or something doesn't actually sound as he imagined he has no problem about changing the songs, he's the genius behind the music but they work as a band.

Great song to check out for Marco displaying his voice and talent is from the same Tampere concert: "The Islander". The narration during the Greatest show is Richard Dawkins, English ethologist, evolutionary biologist, and author., he appears on stage with them on other shows. This song is based on his writings and is about the formation of the Solar System and the creation of the earth itself, and the introduction of life, (the growling of early man, etc)

They crucified Groot and used him as a keyboard stand

In front of Tuomas's keyboards is the Groot (Marvel character). And yes, he is a genius. You're not the first and not the last who says that. Already in 2012 after Imaginaerum album release Iron Maiden's song writer and bassist, Steve Harris, said that "Tuomas is a f****ng genius!". And after that Tuomas wrote the album where was this 21 minute masterpiece about the birth of a universe, the birth of life on Earth and a human evolution - the Greatest Show On Earth!

Here's the entire lyrics of the song, if you missed those spoken words - well, wisdoms, I would say by professor Richard Hawkins.

*I. Four Point Six*

Archaean horizon
The first sunrise
On a pristine Gaea
Opus perfectum
Somewhere there us sleeping

[Spoken]
"After sleeping through a hundred million centuries
We have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet
Sparkling with color, bountiful with life
Within decades we must close our eyes again
Isn't it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief
Time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe
And how we have come to wake up in it?"

*II. Life
*

The cosmic law of gravity
Pulled the newborns around a fire
A careless, cold infinity
In every vast direction
Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone
She has a tale to tell
From the stellar nursery into a carbon feast
Enter LUCA

The tapestry of chemistry
There's a writing in the garden
Leading us to the mother of all

[Chorus 1]
We are one
We are the universe
Forbears of what will be scions of the Devonian sea
Aeons pass, writing the tale of us all
A day-to-day new opening
For the greatest show on Earth

Ion channels
Welcoming the outside world to the stuff of stars
Bedding the tree of a biological holy
Enter life

The tapestry of chemistry
There's a writing in the garden
Leading us to the mother of all

[Chorus 1]

We are here to care for the garden
The wonder of, birth of, every form most beautiful
Every form most beautiful

[Chorus 1]

*III. The Toolmaker
*

After a billion years
The show is still here
Not a single one of your fathers died young
The handy travelers out of Africa
Little Lucy of the Afar

Gave birth to fantasy
To idolatry
To self destructive weaponry

Enter the god of gaps
Deep within the past
Atavistic dread of the hunted

Enter Ionia
The cradle of thought
The architecture of understanding
The human lust to feel so exceptional
To rule the Earth

Hunger for shiny rocks
For giant mushroom clouds
The will to do just as you'd be done by
Enter history
The grand finale
Enter ratkind

[Chorus 2 (x3)]
Man, he took his time in the sun
Had a dream to understand
A single grain of sand
He gave birth to poetry
But one day'll cease to be
Greet the last light of the library

We were here! (x4)

*IV. The Understanding
*

[Spoken]
"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones.
Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born.
The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact
never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara.
Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats,
scientists greater than Newton.
We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA
so massively exceeds the set of actual people.
In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I,
in our ordinariness, that are here.
We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds,
how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state
from which the vast majority have never stirred?"

"There is grandeur in this view of life,
with its several powers,
having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one.
And that whilst this planet has gone cycling on
according to the fixed law of gravity,
from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been,
and are being evolved."

*V. Sea-Worn Driftwood*
[Instrumental]

I would be interested in seeing your reaction to "Dead Boy's Poem" by Nightwish live at buenos aires. It's a more acoustic sound and Floor is amazing, which really goes without saying at this point I guess.

I think it's not about their Greatest Show on Earth but the show we all are a part, life it self, all the living things we see around us, that's the Greatest Show on Earth. From the big bang (?) upto today 🤗 All the best 👍

I like your reactions, but you skipping parts of this masterpiece for listeners should be considered crime and you should go to a jail ....

Christi, this piece could be considered Tuomas' view of the evolution of the Earth and Humankind's place on it.
There are elements of Professor Richard Dawkins and Charles Darwin's musings, both renowned biologists.
The 'figure' on the front of Tuomas' keyboard may represent Humankind strapped to the evolutionary process, (just my thoughts).
The narrator is indeed Richard Dawkins, and when they performed this at Wembley in 2015, Dawkins read the last passage on stage with the band and took the curtain call with the band.
Tuomas is indeed an exceptional composer and I can hardly wait to see what he has in store in 2020 with the new album release.
If Floor's excitement is any guide, it will be well worth the wait.
May I suggest you react to Dead Boy's Poem live from Buenos Airies.Just when you think you have heard it all from Floor, she re-interprets one of their early songs in a way that takes it to another level.
Thank you for your reactions, the warmth and positivity you exude is wonderful. 😊😊

Christy, please do a reaction to my new favorite Nightwish song! "Dead Boys Poem" live from the new Blu-ray Decades from Buenos Aires. Emotional and powerful. I think you will appreciate it. The lyrics involve everything that Tuomas would like to have said to the people he loved if he were to pass unexpectedly.

I think the herd of deer running by fit most well to this song about the beauty of life in its diversity! Consider your experience further enhanced by their appearance, and thank you for the react! Nightwish is due to release a new album this April, initial reviews describe it as even more grandiose than the album with Greatest Show on Earth, it should be interesting material to react to, once its out. Peace!

It's ironic how relatively unknown Floor Jansen was in the Netherlands before she participated on Beste Zangers on television here. How Nightwish has eluded me for all these years is a complete mystery, but I'm ecstatic that I discovered them. I've been binge watching their concerts the last couple of months now in a slightly obsessive manner -- as if there is any other way.

Currently binge-watching Lost in Space on Netflix. It's very good, enthralling and hard to look away. Nonetheless for a reaction to The Greatest Show on Earth, that shiz is getting paused and here I am.

Well, your reaction is just spot on. You observe and diagnose this masterpiece perfect.
Nothing else to add - just superb reaction from - as always.

just to point out, although you probably already know...

the "we were here" with the crowd chanting together, is not about being on that show... but about humanity being a part of the greatest show on Earth and leaving it's mark on the universe, even if we come to someday disappear.

"Man, he took his time in the sun
Had a dream to understand
A single grain of sand

But one day'll cease to be

We were here!
We were here!
We were here!
We were here!
