To start, the book states that 50 third-year junior high classes out of the thousands of schools get selected per year.
There are multiple reasons for the Battle Royale in the novel:
1. Help the government and its military research survival skills and battle readiness.
2. Instill terror and distrust in all of Japan's citizens to curb any attempts at rebellion.
3. Population control and to discourage having kids.

I watched this back then before Hunger Games and PUBG was a thing. The thing that I liked most about this movie was that, apart from just merciless brainless gore killing stuff, it also explores on how human psychology worked under such scenario. One moment you could be best friends with your cohort and all, next moment you could start killing one another over trust issues and survival.

Movie was great but the extensive detail the manga and novel go into explaining certain backstories, plot points and character motivations is unreal in comparison to the film

You read the manga or the novel, you get a real view into these kids backstory and mindsets, including the ones who go insane fron the stress

I really liked this film when I saw it years ago. The mysteriousness /depth of the characters was something that really stood out for me as oppose to other brutal films like it. Definitely recommend this film.

This movie is the reason I never watched hunger games, since by reviews and trailers, I decided that it was simply a pale, anemic watered-down imitation of Battle Royale.

8:56, that girl is litteraly the inspiration for the character named Kelly in the mobile battle Royal game name free fire, the only difference is that she has shot hair, the scratch is there

3:35 You say "or is it simply just an event for disgruntled youth-hating adults to look forward to." like it's a joke but a big point of the story being written in the first place was to express the distain that japan had for it's youth in the way they're shuffled through a rigid school system then thrown out into a cut-throat job market to be either exploited for labor or suffer and starve if they can't make it.
