That transition from preheating the pots to burying them in the fire sounds intense! Gotta say, the makeshift shelf was a smart move.

I have NEVER thought about how pottery used to be fired or how you'd do it without a kiln, this was so interesting and cool😳💖

That black clay is GORGEOUS! And the pit-firing is fascinating.

You should come to Washington. And the Toledo river to get volcanic ash and clay

Love your pit firing…pots turned out nice….the cracks add character making the pots look ancient! Did both pit and raku firing…We tossed assorted crystals and minerals into the pit firing…copper gave the pottery some nice turquoise coloring….not like a glaze, more splattering. It was fun….and it looks like you are having fun and enjoying the process!

Love! - note for anyone curious- these are NOT food safe, you may not drink or store in these vessels, they are not air tight and not fully ventrified (non-porous). These make great plant pots or storage pots for dried foods that can be exposed to air! (:

These are awesome!!! Also, I’m an archaeologist, try digging ~1m down most places, some places it’s as shallow as ~50cm and you should be able to find clay ALMOST anywhere!!

EDIT*
I forgot to add, the colors of the clay that is a lower stratigraphy can be REALLY pretty, I’ve seen yellow and red banded before.

Aw would love to have seen the finished products, must be in another video. That black clay is soo gorgeous, would be beautiful if it stayed that colour.

Wonderful. Want to do this with my students. Can you recommend a source for how to find clay in the wilds and your pottery techniques. 🐺
