The Buddha’s teachings on associating with people who inspire and uplift us is something I’ve come to value even more as I’ve gotten older. The people we surround ourselves with really do shape us. I still have much to learn, but I’m grateful for the wisdom I’ve gained, and for the reminder that the journey toward wisdom is continuous. May we all continue to grow in understanding and compassion, no matter our age.

I’ve thought about this a lot. Gaining knowledge, for the sake of just having the knowledge and doing nothing productive with it, is a waste of time and energy, in my opinion. It does nothing to help the world, which is, to me, the reason we are here. If one has wisdom, however, they can use it to create a better world. To cite one example, I have average intelligence at best. I’m fine with that. I have personal wisdom, though, and that’s what I’m proud of and I’m always trying to improve, and use to improve the world. That is non violence. Even before starting to learn about Buddhism (and I have a long way to go with that), I realized that my path included not killing insects, not killing plants, not pulling weeds, feeding the birds and other animals outside, etc. That’s what makes me truly happy.
