Titan: The submersible | Special report

After five frantic days of searching, "major pieces" of the Titan have been found near the Titanic wreck - with all five men who were on board the submersible presumed dead.

The US Coast Guard said the breakthrough was made by a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) which had been scouring the ocean floor.

The deep-sea robot, which was sent below the waves by Canadian vessel Horizon Arctic, made the initial discovery on Thursday morning when it spotted the "tail cone" from the rear tip of the submersible.

The hull was making cracking noises every time it went down. They had acoustic transducers on the hull to monitor the sounds it was making in hopes of identifying what was “normal” and thus being able to detect anything abnormal, however, EVERY cracking noise made by the carbon fiber hull was the sound of a microscopic fracture in the resin, or delamination of a fiber, and so every cracking sound reduced the safety margin of the hull by a tiny amount. Hundreds if not thousands of cracking noises per dive, equaled a significant loss in the ability of the hull to distribute crushing forces evenly.
The report is that they had already dropped their ballast, aborting the dive, before comms were lost, which means they knew something was going wrong. As the pressure rose, the hull got closer to its failure point and the rate at which cracking noises were occurring would have accelerated. Prompting them to try and rise to reduce pressure on the hull. Just before implosion, the hull would have sounded like popcorn popping. So they definitely knew they were about to die. Death was surely sudden, but their last minutes were in impotent apprehension and fear. Nothing to do but drop the ballast and hope pressure would drop faster than the hull was failing.

Dude got one thing right for sure:
He’s definitely gonna be remembered for the rules he broke…..

I honestly feel so terrible for Suleman, so young and trusted his dad and went anyway even though he was terrified. My heart hurts the most for him, Stockton Rush on the other hand 😡

The only person that I feel sympathy for is the 19-year-old. He was only just getting started in life.

So it's clear this "CEO" had a huge ego and was more concerned about his "legacy" rather than doing things the way so many others in this industry made very clear to him. In his twisted mind he figured if he did thing's completely different he'd be recognized as "innovative" but there's a reason things are done a certain way

It’s rather surprising that the two of those onboard, both with immense diving and aviation experience, would have chosen to go within submersible.

The Titan was only able to be under the pressure of being so far down in the ocean so many times. Once too many and we all know what happened. Was bound to happen eventually and no "safety net" so to speak. 💔

Challenger lost due to incompetence and greed, Columbia lost for negligence by not telling the crew about the damage at lift off. Titaniç lost by greed and stupidity, Titan lost by selfishness and greed. All of these terrible disasters could have been avoided it's the people in charge who took these things out never forget that

Experimental prototype, shouldn’t have had anyone on it. He should have made it remote control.

They might not have felt pain but they certainly experienced terror. It was likely making horrific noises under that pressure which is why they dropped ballast waits to emergency ascend to save the hull. Could’ve been many minutes hearing the carbon fiber delaminate before the actual instant of implosion

The rules he was so proud of breaking ended up being his very undoing.

My heart goes with the lost. However, many a times we are taught how insignificant and helpless human beings are infront of greater powers that surrounds us all at any moment of our life.

I would not get in that sub after seeing how terribly it was put together.

They seem to gloss over the fact that Nargeolet headed the RMS Titanic, *INC* which obtained exclusive salvage rights to the wreck and took many thousands of things off it. It’s almost weirdly like the Titanic now claimed him.😔
Discoverer Bob Ballard saw it as sacred space and did not want the Titanic wreck toured or plundered. He was terribly upset when the crow’s nest was plundered. It had been there on his discovery dive. The salvaging angered and upset him.
(I know there are arguments about whether the items in the ship belong where they fell or in museums; can’t help but wonder what the profits were for the salvaging…. And the personal items; it’s not considered good form to plunder last resting places, though it’s been done throughout history).

After such a catastrophic implosion there are sadly unlikely to be any bodies to recover or even be allowed to rest in peace. I really feel for the son who apparently felt uncomfortable about it and only went to keep his father happy according to his sister, the boy's aunt. A tragic and unnecessary loss of lives.🙏😔

"It may be prudent to leave them where they are"?
As if there's any other option. Sadly, there are literally no remains to be found, much less bring to the surface. An implosion at that depth would instantly liquify the people on board. Terrible to think about, I know, but that's the reality. I hope the families can take some solace in that their loved ones died before they could register what was happening. RIP to those lost.

the pressure was so powerful when the vessel imploded, it was like a lightning strike. they didn't even knew what hit them

No one seems to mention the cost of what is, nothing more than a day out.
A father and son spend half a million dollars on a day out whilst others can't afford to pay their bills.
We live in a world where billionaires are put on pedestals.
I am sorry for the families loss but the money these people waste is obscene.
