A Scary Mistake on the Router Table Almost Cost Me #shorts

Admitting mistakes is hard. #shorts Especially when I know better. I post this in hopes others don't make my mistakes. Luckily there was no injury or damage. This was my first time using this giant Whiteside Ultimate Trim router bit and the first time using a template at the router table. Thanks for taking the time to show your viewers what Not-To-Do.!

Even as a seasoned woodworker I find myself the most cautious around routers. They pack a punch with very little forgiveness. Profiles are nice but no one wants a classical edge on their forearm. I appreciate you showing people the risks. Having gone to a vocational high school I've seen kickbacks from routers, table saws, and belt sanders throw fairly large projects more than halfway across a 60' shop.

I, for one, appreciate you pretending to make a mistake so that viewers learn a valuable lesson.

Only power tool that has ever bit me! Was doing a grove for an inlay, launched the board across my garage and chewed into my finger. Happened so fast there was nothing I could do. Had some pretty nasty cuts from the straight bit. Now I use gripper blocks. Glad you’re ok!! Live and learn brother!

Wish you would have been able to slow down the playback. Was difficult for my simple mind to follow what you did wrong…

Showing these types of things help us all and reminds us to ALWAYS respect the tools we use.

Get you a nice thick piece of polycarbonate. 3/8s or 1/2 inch should do. Mount some handles on the top.
Then stick it to the top of your piece.
Gives you more grip on the piece and protects your hands.

I have that same bit and do these templates often - it's scary. I've had several get chewed off like that, even when I go the right way and carefully.

The real beast in this is your vacuum. After getting a small vacuum at home that I can use with my planer, the router is now by far the messiest tool I have. The vacuum attachment that came with it makes it very hard to see what I'm doing so I don't use it. Even if I put a vacuum near it, my backyard looks like a sandy beach by the time I'm done

On a side note, not tightening the bit enough is the scariest thing I've had happen to me. I got these tongue & groove bits as a set. They're huge. First time I used it, as I turned the router on and it spun up I heard it vibrate, then saw it drop. I was sure I'd have to pull it out of my shin bone. It hit the for and shot off like a friggen bullet. Lightly soiled myself, recovered the piece and re-evaluated my life decisions 😂

I have been a carpenter for 30 years and a router is the olny tool that has ever got me .

NB! Especially when doing curves it’s sometimes impossible to not get into problems/danger/tear out even though feeding in the right direction from the beginning.

Consider researching this (causes for mishaps) for your own safety!

Thanks for showing. Hopefully everyone grasped the issue.

just be more precise with the bandsaw and you'll have significantly less material the router can grab and yank the workpiece with

Are you pushing in the wrong direction?
How are you supposed to do it?

I had the same issue recently with Adirondack chair templating. Scares the heck out of me. I need to talk to a seasoned expert and see what the solution is. Mine was mainly happening when I had to route at a point. When I was hitting it on a wider side I had no issues. Not sure how I want to proceed with future chairs. Glad you weren’t hurt. I respect my routers more than anything in my shop.

Awesome! Where’d you buy the template?

Buy a shaper. There's only so much you can do with a router table. Never climb cut while dimensioning, climb only on a finish cut.

Going around tight curves is sketchy. The last few boards I made were ripped away from me. I just cut as close as I can and use the oscillating sander now. I save the template routing for long flowing curves and straight lines. I like my fingers.
