I tried to wait until the pre-order LP Tigers Blood arrived (it's on its way, I'm told, from Rough Trade), but this video was too tempting. "3 Sisters": Is that about mirror twins & a sister or Anton Chekov? I don't know...But when her seminal 2020 album St. Cloud broke through, making many of the Albums of the Year lists, along with Bob Dylan's critically well-received Rough & Rowdy Ways--with St. Cloud usually ahead of it--I felt justified in my long-held belief that we've had a new poet amongst us for the last (give or take) 20 years--and, in that time, she's never stopped putting out great albums. (By her own admission, she's "an Album Girl.") So when you hear lines like, "You might get lost in the moment, take it easy on your opponent...I'm defenseless against the sales pitch, am I your moat or your drawbridge?" I think of Dylan's Rough & Rowdy lines: "Got a tell-tale heart, like Mr. Poe, Got skeletons in the wall of people you know. I'll drink to the truth, and to things we said, I'll drink to the man that shares your bed." (from "I Contain Multitudes") And I could pull multiple lines from each song that were equally unique--the point being that only these two songwriters could have written these songs. Their lyrics, vocal phrasing, word choice, rhymes, etc. are all one-of-a-kind. And emotions that have been around since the Dawn of Music, suddenly have a new shade of meaning; a new expression...
