In the comics Shane is so simple and basic with no character development but in the show he’s one of the best written characters, along with some of the best acting by Jon Bernthal. He elevated Shane as a character drastically.

I think killing Otis is what changed him forever. It seems like everyone forgets him killing Otis. He had no regrets killing him, and it was easy for him. As Dale said “your built for this world” I think Shane killing Otis was the first human killing another human in the show.
