Their mother was the only person in the family that supported Mario and Luigi. Bless her heart!

I wasn't expect to see Mario/Luigi's family made it in the movie.

Are we just gonna ignore the fact about how super caring of a brother Luigi is in this scene? I mean, not only does he try to comfort Mario after being let down by his dad’s words, but also that pasta plate he brings him has absolutely zero mushrooms, since he knows Mario hates them.

Like man, I think we all need a good brother just like our very own Luigi.

As an Italian American, this Italian dinner is accurate, only problem, relatives aren’t as racist as they are irl

I love how Mario's picking out the mushrooms from his plate, and passing them for Luigi. A little goofy bit that also displays some character.

Okay, as an Italian-American from New York, I can actually confirm this is the vibe big family dinners give, though they're usually more lighthearted. They somehow managed to capture the feeling that our get-togethers around Christmas have, and it's beautiful. One of the many reasons I love this movie.

I LOVED how Luigi tries to comfort and reassure Mario that he’s NOT bringing Luigi down while also bringing him his food without the mushrooms in it. Luigi is such a very sweet, attentive brother with such a very big heart! Now I know where Luigi gets his big heart from! 😊😊

We all need a brother like Luigi in our lives. I cannot be more thankful for how supportive and encouraging he is to Mario.

They got the Italian-American Family Dinner energy down to a T here 😂

I’ve always loved how Charles voicing Mario’s father sounds like there’s a wario demon in his voice barely escaping out 😭😭

I love how this scene gives us a deeper glimpse into Mario and Luigi's humanity. Behind all Goomba-stomping and Fire Flowers, deep down, they're just average Joes with a family of their own, just like you and me.

I love that the women of the family are supportive of them and the way their mother treats each of them. She knows Mario is robust by the way she pokes him and Luigi is sensitive by the gentle pat on his shoulder.

It actually quite nice to see a scene with Mario and Luigi's family in the film. I also liked how they greeted each other in such a friendly way and there was already a hot meal ready to eat. Mario and Luigi are lucky to have such a humble family. And I am glad we get to see Mario and Luigi's origins covered too.

I love that the family joshes around each other, but as soon as Mario's Dad talks about Mario bringing down Luigi, they all look at him out of disbelief. xD

Mario and luigi actually removing their gloves to eat adds a bit more realistic detail to the scene.

1:38 you just realise that subtle moment they rarely do in animated movies, Mario rejected Luigi’s offering of pasta. But it’s so subtle like shaking his head. It’s those little cues to tell you without saying anything so many things: he’s not hungry, he’s too upset and his mind is elsewhere. I don’t know why I only noticed it now, but I love that they did that. Despite how much people hated pacing of the movie being too fast, I feel like it’s one of those rare moments you feel like it works to suggest how much time could be saved on exposition when it actually works, where you don’t have to spell it out.

I like how Charles martinet voiced Mario’s dad. It shows that he can play different roles

The fact that Mario despises mushrooms so much is proof of how much he loves his brother. Mario would do ANYTHING for Luigi, which later includes eating tons of the food he hates in order to be strong enough to save him!

1:09-1:12 Man! Chris Pratt is such a brilliant actor! He delivers that sarcastic and dejected line so well.
