lyrics:
We're riding down the boulevard
We're riding through the dark night, night
With half the tank and empty heart
Pretending we're in love, but it's never enough, nah
As the sirens fill the lonely air
Oh, how did we get here now now now babe
We see a storm is closing in
Pretending we ain't scared

Get you up on Ocean Avenue
With neon in your eyes
And dreams of city lights
Oh yeah, oh yeah!
You're the one I used to idolize
I knew it wasn't right
Addicted to this high
Addicted so...

Don't say a word while we dance with the devil
You brought a fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil
You brought a fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)

We're running all the red lights down
No way that we can stop, nah nah
A quarter tank and almost gone
Pretending we're in love, but it's never enough, nah
I wish we could take it back in time
Before we crossed the line, now now now, babe
We see a storm is closing in
I reach out for your hand

Get you up on Ocean Avenue
With neon in your eyes
And dreams of city lights
Oh yeah, oh yeah!
You're the one I used to idolize
I knew it wasn't right
Addicted to this high
Addicted so...

Don't say a word while we dance with the devil
You brought a fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on) (hold on)
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil
You brought a fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on) (hold on)

Oh oh, hold on! Hold on, oh yeah!

am i the only one who thinks this song is really sad/exhilirating but definitely not happy? When I heard it in the car and heard dance with the devil i initially thought drugs (heroin specifically), cos he wished they hadn't crossed the line and could go back, but now all they can do is hold on to each other on the highway to never. being an ex user i know you feel like your on a runaway train and the only way off is the end of the line (which i thought he meant about the running out of petrol thing and being on a highway/path taking them to never (existing anymore/dying).
The music and way he sings 'don't say a word while we dance with the devil you bring a fire to a world so cold' shows how they both know that should say stop but they cant say a word to stop themselves before/while they take it again/dance with the devil'. but also shows that he has one thing to hang onto (her bringing a fire to the world so cold (as he is not alone on the highway/addiction) and how after the line was crossed nothing can bring that much 'pretend being in love' exhhiliration.
after watching the clip i still think its about what i think but changed to suit the clubbing scene and the drugs ecstasy and ice. as the girls are all having the time of their lives and unable to stop until you see how fuckeed up and unhappy they are at the end just looking at the ocean smoking and when the chick has to put sunnies on her face so she doesn't have to look at her own reflection in the mirror the next day. anyway I've tried to find the actual meaning somewhere but nowhere can i find it except people saying the song makes them happy. i don't normally comment but someone must feel something other than happiness when he says we reach for each others hands to hold on! his voice seems on the verge of breaking/going crazy and feeling like he and she are about to die and have nothing to hold on to but each other. feels so exhilarating and terrifying at the same time.someone plz respond. just opinions on songs meaning plz refrain personal judgement. luckily i had a child and managed to get off that highway to never but this song makes me think of how i felt 3 years ago, exhiliration mixed with terror at where the road i was taking would lead. to nothing. a road to never
also you spend 80% of your life in a car waiting for stuff or picking up stuff in that life (if you own one) and 90% of the time wanting to drive it into a brick wall. i had nothing at the time to hang on to but my partner. we lost everything we owned but we hung onto each others hands ready for death knowing if one let go the other would die, or wed die together. defiantly brought a fire to the cold world not being completely alone, even if u weren't in love holding onto someones hand may be the only thing that saves u going completely crazy with fear (like he sounds he is in the song), or at least gives some comfort knowing u won't die alone and someone else feels just as empty hearted. unlike what i think happened in the song we got out. the clip looks like the girls are all faking they are ok but they all know the others feel just as empty the next day so are holding onto each other

In my mind this song is one lover grieving what he has come to realize is the end of their relationship.

So often it’s only in hind sight we see clearly…and here he is reflecting as this is the last time they will be together.

“Empty hearts….
“Riding through the dark
Pretending we’re in love
How did we get here?”
“We see the storms closing in
Pretending we’re not sacred.”

No one wants to let go…saying good bye…It’s the shittiest part of loving someone.

…”We’re running all the red lights now…no way that we can stop…
Pretending we’re in love…
But it’s never enough.”

It’s that desperate part in life where you know it’s time to go, but you want one more dance…one more ride…one more whatever… but the party ends just the same.
Change is inevitable…and the only way we can know where a road is going to take us is to follow it…to take that chance….

He knows its ending and he cant stop it from happening.

Dancing with the devil is referencing the struggle within him to let go.

I imagine hes driving them around …at this point they are silent….having said everything there was to say…except good bye…and I suspect he will continue to drive until they can say goodbye.
“quarter tank and almost gone…”
He knows the time is running out.
Hes going to have to take her home….and go…

The song captures the sadness and emptiness of a good bye…

Its beautiful, poetic and hearbreakinly painful just the same….

We have all been there….🥀❤
Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved….
😔❤
