I suppose Minecraft is always different when seeing someone play and seeing yourself actually mine straight down. 1 out of the 127 times I dug straight down in the last 10 years, I fell in lava, 1 time I feel in water, 11 times I fell in a cave, and the rest I dug til I hit bedrock usually coming out with absolutely no diamonds.

Unpopular opinion, but mining straight down is actually surprisingly safe, especially if you use subtitles and can MLG. Mining straight down is also 3 to 5 times faster than the staircase method, depending on how tall you make your staircase (they should be 5 blocks tall, so that you can add stairs and go up/down without banging your head).
