Professor Ken Harvey of Xiamen University Malaysia demonstrates how to design and produce a tabloid newspaper using QuarkXpress. Quark, by the way, is every bit as good at InDesign and is very similar in how it operates. Quark was the leader in the industry when desktop publishing was first created, and it has been credited with saving Apple. In the late 1980s the difference between Apple and Windows computers was negligible when it came to word processing and other simple programs. But Apple was far superior in handling desktop publishing. At at that time Quark was designed for Apple while PageMaker was for Windows. Adobe has somehow gained a monopoly in recent years in the communications industry, but the quality of the two programs is the same. Quark is making a great offer to universities right now, similar to what Adobe did in the 1980s. This may be the key to Quark regaining market share. I have used Quark, PageMaker and InDesign as a professional editor, and currently my preference is Quark.
