Smallville (2001- 2011): What Happened to this Show?

We all love a good superhero origin story. Sure, it's great to see Spider-Man swing from buildings, but it’s what Uncle Ben tells a young Peter Parker that touches us all. We all love seeing Batman kick the Joker's teeth in, but we are all fascinated by that tragic night in crime alley. So it’s no surprise that the first and greatest superhero of all time should have a TV show about what defines him. There is a reason why Clark Kent is the best of us. While Batman may be the ultimate example of physical perfection, Superman is the pinnacle of the goodness of humanity. But fans have always debated: is Superman Clark Kent, or is Clark Kent just a disguise? I have always argued Superman is just a cape; Clark is the hero who wears it. Smallville is the case for my belief in what makes Superman the greatest superhero in the world. The series followed a young Clark Kent's journey to becoming the savior of humanity. On the flip side, we also saw how one man could never escape his fate of becoming the world's most heinous criminal. Tragically, two friends who would wind up on opposite sides of good and evil. But have I built up the show into some kind of forgotten masterpiece? Or am I just drunk on kryptonite? Let's find out in this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten.

This show is fascinating because of how long it ran, it saw the world of comic book adaptations change so drastically during its run. It started before the first Spider-Man movie and ended a year before the first Avengers movie. Timeline wise, that's such a monumental shift in the genre and the show for better or worse tried to keep up with it so in that respect, I don't think the show gets the respect it's due. Is it perfect? Absolutely not, but it gets more things right than it gets wrong and it was ahead of the curve in a lot of ways

I was a teenager when this show premiered, and for all 10 seasons, I always watched it with my dad. It was our special bonding experience, watching the show together.

Smallville is one of my favorite series of all time & every super hero show that came after wouldn’t have happened without it, as strong as the show started it finished even stronger as far as I’m concerned.

To this day I still have every season of Smallville on dvd, this is one of my favorite shows of all time and I’m not even really a Superman fan like that the show is just that nostalgic and good for me

I absolutely loved this show. It was a must see every week for me. I never minded the monster of the week episodes. For whatever reason that worked for me. I also felt like the casting was perfect for all of the main characters. No issues there. I always wished we had gotten a little bit of Clark in the suit, but I get it that that wasn't the show they were making. It is also a shame that this cast never got their shot at a theatrical movie. Tom would have made such a perfect movie Man of Steel. I can't say enough good things about his show. It was still back in a time when everything was simpler. It wasn't all about agendas and all the other crap we have to put up with now in our TV shows and I am sure you all know the kind of stuff I am talking about. Great memories of a time not so long ago. Thanks for the amazing fun look back at a lovely, heartfelt and fun series, something we are truly in need of once again these days.

One thing I loved about Smallville was how Clark used his powers in everyday life. Clark can often be seen chilling and using his powers for daily tasks. Like 6:31 when he's just using heat vision to toast bread. The show would often do that for "breathing room" between scenes, having Clark do farm work casually with superpowers. It made audiences believe that this was normal for Clark, that his powers were a part of how he lived everyday.

One of my favorite character in the show is Jonathan Kent. Made me wish he was my dad and a great inspiration for being a dad.

Superman is what he can do, Clark Kent is who he is.

Something you missed: Terri Hatcher briefly appeared in one episode as Lois Lane's mom and Dean Cain came back as the main villain one episode

Smallville was awesome and paved the way for this century of comic book shows DC, Marvel, Heroes and otherwise. We haven't had a comic show to last 10 years plus a 3 year comic follow up since this show.

Putting this here for fans that may not know this:
Michael Rosenbaum(Lex Luthor) and Tom Welling (Clark Kent) have a Youtube channel, "Talk Ville Podcast" where they watch and react to Smallville. They break the episode down, talk about making it and have some really great character insights. Often they bring on celebrity guests to interview and stuff as well.

The greatest superhero tv show that will ever exist. I didn't love the later seasons as much as I did those first five seasons...but even at its worst, Smallville was still leagues ahead of anything the CW or Disney+ has put out since.

I absolutely loved this show while it was airing. I'll never forget the hype for the episode with flash, aquaman, cyborg, green arrow and Martian manhunter. It felt like the biggest thing superheroes had ever done so far.

after finishing this, I listenned to the theme song again and, I got to say, your images and that music hit me hard. All these memories from the time when I watched the show came back. Nostalgia in the best possible way. Powerful stuff. Thank you !

Hearing the John Williams score when Reeve appeared sent a genuine shiver up my spine.
