LEGO has begun rereleasing popular LEGO sets in new colors. Same set. Different colors. Is this a quick cash grab or simply a way of performing market research? Is it good to have more color options when buying sets? Let’s explore the reasons why LEGO is implementing this new strategy of recoloring sets. LEGO has been releasing recolored sets for a few years now and many have gone under the radar! It’s surprising how many people haven’t noticed… but I have. Watch the entire video to see all the recolored LEGO sets and minifigures!

LEGO has been experimenting with releasing sets in multiple colors. What do you think of this strategy? This was really interesting to research. I hope you enjoy the video!

The pink parrot isn't a straight color swap, the color patterns are different too.

Edit:I have both and I built a double perch for them to stand on side-by-side.

I bought both parrots so they can marry and kiss

I think the parrot was realised in pink so it could be a couples set, it was quite a popular date trend on TikTok for couples where they'd build one bird each and it would represent them. I bought them for me and my boyfriend because of it.

LEGO: retires a set.
Fans: “No! I wanted that set!”
LEGO: doesn’t retire set.
Fans: “No! Thats lazy!”

I noticed you didn't mention Bionicle. They released 12 color variants of the Bohrok. Maybe they're not exact recolors, because the claw pieces were different on all of them, but definitely worth noting.
Recolors are fine. They just need to work on improving the price so that people would actually consider buying multiple. With traditional model kits, the plastic is usually just white or gray, with the expectation that it will be painted to look as desired. Painting Lego is sacrilege, so we're either stuck with the available colors, or we have to source parts in the right color from other kits.

LEGO fans: why are they releasing the exact same set, sometimes in new colors and with minor tweaks?
Transformers fans: welcome to the club.

I think it’s cool that some sets have a copy that’s a different color. Works best with the car sets, because the same model can be made differently.

Sometimes you wanted the set, but it was in the wrong color, so you decided against the purchase. LEGO is just trying to reach those missed sales. They are a business.

YESS. Lego Technic is too hyperfixated on racecars. I hate it sm. I wish we got more construction machine models. All the non-racecar models are wayy too basic and small

I think it's a pretty cool idea for 3-in-1 sets in particular, since you can build multiple different sets from those parts.

So you could have the pink parrot, and want to also have frog on display, if you want you can have a blue one. And you technically bought a different set.

Don't think I'll be having it, but I think it's smart.

Personally I'm glad they put out the pink parrot because my best friend's favorite color is pink so I bought both so we could build together. It was a really nice experience and we both had a lot of fun!

The first time I can think of that Lego did recolors of sets was the My Own Train line. Specifically the locomotives, which came in black, blue, green, old brown, and old dark grey.

Also, although it was a very odd release, the My Own Train passenger wagon did have a second color released as part of set 4534 Express. In said set, we got a blue passenger wagon, which differed in color from the original passenger wagon in green.

Cool, huh?

its not much of a cash grab if they originally retail for the same price.

I think it's a mix
A little cash grab
A little market testing
A little collect-ability
And a little passion.

Because man I've seen a lot of "Ugh I wish this came in [color]." even for lego, and I know people that if a set comes in multiple colors, they want to buy and build them to have a full display.

Plus imagine if you had a lil fiat or something in one color and their set only came in another color, and then bam they release YOUR color. A lot of people would want it, build it and then probably photo graph it with their own car. [Or pet or object]

I'm more surprised they don't do this more often, like having store exclusive versions, where places like Target or Walmart get their own variant.

Rereleases and recolors aren't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes retiring an old set makes it hard for people to get ahold of, so rereleasing it is great. Recolors are only bad if they're a naked attempt at tricking people into buying a set twice. Having options isn't bad at all.

At one point in time you could order Lego sets and choose your preferred color for them. That was the "My own Train" series. Each locomotive would have a bag of standard parts, most of which were black, while all the colorful parts were in a separate bag. That made it easy for Lego to put the pre-made part bags together and send them out, depending on which color you ordered.
I don't know why they don't do that kind of stuff anymore. It would be easier than what they already have to do for the Pick-a-Brick service.
Lego Sets are already separated into numbered bags, so if a set has a specific bag that you would like to order on its own, why don't they just let you do that? That would be sooo great for train sets where you just want more of a specific train car. Sure, for some sets it would make little sense to let you order only one bag, but when it does make sense they should let you.
