I’m currently learning to sew because my grandma gave my dad her old sewing machine, which she got from her grandma. This sewing machine is from when my great great grandmother was a teenager and still works brilliantly

We had a furnace in the house i grew up in from the 1930s that thing was the size of my car and had an entire room to herself in the basement but it kept the house warm and it NEVER broke down and it survived MULTIPLE basement floods up until a really bad flood in summer of 2020 that finally killed her
When the HVAC people came to take her away all the guys were taking pictures of her saying "nobody is gonna believe me!"
The sales rep was straight up and said "best you're gonna get out of a new one is 10 years, they just don't make them like this anymore ."

Planned Obsolescence is funny because occasionally you get someone who doesn't understand the concept and forces the products to be made better and all the higher uos get mad because sales are lower

The many reasons that Planned Obsolescence needs to be illegal. Also, it would help the environment. I would be fine paying a lot for something that lasts over a decade instead of a few years.

This was my grandmother. Her old vacuum cleaner from the 80s broke on her in the 2000s. She bought a new one that broke within a year or two. She was saying how they don’t make things like they use to anymore.

Plantronics made Headsets in the early 2010s with a breaking point. I bought 3 of those, all three broke after 2 years at in the EXACT same spot... Never bought anything from them ever again.

it might be worth mentioning that stuff like this may be subject to survivorship bias -- we have this old stuff that still works bc it still works, no one would keep a 1970s fridge in their kitchen to refrigerate stuff if it didn't work! theres probably like tons of stuff from back then that was thrown out but 1 person may have gotten fed up and was like "im going to take care of this fridge in a way that will make my children think i dont love them in comparison"

but also planned obsolesce is real and makes me want to bite people

I have a sears coldspot freezer that is from somewhere between 1950 and 1976. The thing is still kicking ass and will probably last me a few more centuries

As a grandchild of a antique owner i can confirm that the old sewing machines work better than the newer ones
