Turkey postpones trilateral meeting with Sweden and Finland after Swedish Quran burning protest

Turkey has indefinitely postponed a trilateral meeting with Sweden and Finland after a Quran was burned at a protest near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

The three countries were set to meet in Brussels next month to discuss Sweden and Finland’s bid to join Nato, which has yet to be approved by Turkey.

The two countries voiced their desire to join the military alliance following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but Turkey initially used its veto rights, accusing the countries of supporting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an armed Kurdish group which is designated a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the EU.

Turkey would lift its veto in June, after Sweden and Finland signed an agreement promising to combat the activities of the group and increase extradition efforts.

I think this is a mistake. I think the Swedish government has made one mistake and this is another. At least Finland is acceding. The burden is on Sweden now to make this right.
