Xanathar is more of a title than anything. If I remember correctly most people who know a thing or two know that this isn't the first Xanathar

I live how D&D took this creature that might have been a middle schooler's idle classroom doodle and gave it a whole social ecosystem with such bizarre personality to it.
They're this bizarre horror from beyond the stars, but instead of just being incomprehensibly alien, they're just *terrible, * but in a way that's easy to understand.

That actually explains why he used to look more spider like, I thought it was just the art style.

Also beholders seem to hate other beholders that don't look just like them more then more then other sentient races, most sentient life is like dogs to them.

In a home game of mine one of the players organized the current Xanathar to be assassinated. AND IT WORKED!! At first it was just to end the evil Xanathar guild entirely but after I (the dm) learned about this lore I got an idea💡! A member of the Xanathar guild found out what the character did and started sending him blackmail, to reveal himself to the rest of the guild or pay the consequences. He came to the lair ready for a fight but instead was greeted to a crime syndicate he now ran. The members gifted his character the robe of eyes magic item, and now that character leads the Xanathar Guild and is known as Xanathar the reborn.

beholders are a Greek tragedy personified they are born with unrivaled power and intelligence and the ability to make an army whenever they want but they are so paranoid of loosing everything they create rivals and enemies everywhere until they finally die in the betrayal they always expected

Considering Beholders can create other Beholders by dreaming, it’s entirely possible that the original Xanathar dreamed of an assassin beholder taking over his position, then woke up to find he had made his dream reality. And then it happened again and again.
