Adding a new block tutorial to the collection today and this block has stole our hearts! A little bit more challenging then most blocks in the collection but totally worth the make because this "Moving Forward" quilt block is a stunner. We used the pretty pretty fabrics from Mister Domestic's new collection called Aura and we can't wait to make more fun things with this island inspired collection!

FABRICS USED:

Fabric A-AUR-44904- Hawaiian Honu Dusk
Fabric B- AUR-54901- Loulu Fans Sun
Fabric C-AUR-44901- Loulu Fans Sand
Fabric D-AUR-54903- Tiki Way Papaya
Fabric E- AUR-54905- Mau Loa Seabed
Fabric F- PE-454- Mediterraneo

CUTTING DIRECTION:

One (1) 3 1/2" square from Fabric A
Four (4) 2" squares from Fabric B
Eight (8) 2 1/2" squares from Fabric B
Four (4) 2 1/2" square from Fabric C
Two (2) 2 7/8" squares from Fabric C
Four (4) 4 1/2" squares from Fabric E
Eight (8) 2 1/2" squares from Fabric D

One (1) 4 1/2" square from Fabric D and F (HST’s)
Eight (8) 2 5/8" x 4 1/2" rectangles from Fabric F

Four (4) 2 3/4" squares from Fabric F (cut in half on diagonal)

BLOCK INSTRUCTIONS:

Take four 2” squares from Fabric B and draw diagonal lines on the wrong side of the fabric with a fabric marking pen, taking into consideration the direction of the fabric. Place two squares right sides together to each corner of your fussy cut square from Fabric A. Sew on the line your drew. Trim seam allowance to ¼”

Repeat this same process with your other two squares from Fabric B and place them on the other two corners and sew on the line you drew!

Next take your 2 ⅞” squares from Fabric C and cut them in half on the diagonal, fold them in half and create a crease mark finding the center of each triangle. Line your crease point up with the centers of your unit. Sew two triangles to each side of your unit.

Press open and sew the other two triangles to each side of your piece.

Set this piece aside and it’s time to make your triangle point blocks.

Take your 4 ½” squares from Fabric E and two 2 ⅝” x 4 ½” rectangles from Fabric F. Draw diagonal lines from corner to corner on each of your rectangles like this.

Place your first rectangle on your 4 1/2" square as follows.
Sew on the line you drew. Trim excess fabric to 1/4" and press open.

Now place your other rectangle right sides together to your
square as follows. Sew on the line you drew and trim excess fabric to
1/4". Press open to reveal your triangle point block. Repeat this process three more times to make a total of four of these blocks!

Now draw diagonal lines on the wrong side of the fabric on all your 2 ½” squares from Fabric D. With half of them going to the right and the other to the left making sure the fabric orientation is going in the same direction.

Place square right sides together to the corner of your triangle point block and sew on the line your drew. Trim excess fabric to ¼” and press open. Repeat this same process with the other square from Fabric D.

Repeat this same process with all your remaining triangle point blocks.

Set these pieces aside and sew two 2 ½” squares from fabric B to each side of a 2 ½” square from Fabric C like this! Trim excess fabric leaving a ¼” seam allowance.

Repeat this process three more times to get four of these triangle units.

To create your HST’s, take a 4 ½” square from Fabric D and F and place right sides together. Sew around around entire square at ¼”. Cut on both diagonals to reveal four HST’s.

Trim your HST’s to 2 ½”.

Take your 2 ¾” squares from Fabric F and cut in half diagonally. Sew two triangle pieces to each side of of your HSt’s like this !

You will need to create four of these triangle units.

Now we have all the units to create our block. Lay out the pieces in front of you following the block design.

Sew your rows together, pressing seams in alternating directions. When your finished you will get a piece that looks like this. It’s time to sew our corner triangle units to each end of your block like this!

Your Moving Forward Block is complete.

Fabulous block. Lots of work but there's movement in the block - helped of course by the fabric. Hope the turtle won't get dizzy.

Mister Domestic is pretty much a god when it comes to sewing and design. LOVE this collection, and the block (especially the little turtle!!!). Who designed the block, btw? It's incredibly beautiful! ETA: The dumb phone seems to sense when you're busy...

Got to be a etter way - you lose almost half of each piece you cut! Beautiful block, but such waste!
