How to tie up a boat

Here I give a couple examples as to why you would ideally want the eye of the line on the dock. Now, here I am on a 32 foot center console boat, which in this case wouldn’t really matter which way you put on the lines. But as you increase the size of the vessel, it gets more and more important to have the eye of the line on the dock.

For one, if you were in an emergency and you had to get off the dock as soon as possible, the easiest way to do that is to untie the lines from your boat. Throw them on the dock and get out.

Second, when you approach a dock, and give the dock hand your lines, you want him to have the easiest job as possible. You don’t want to rely on him to properly tie your cleat, ultimately his/her inability to tie a cleat comes back to being your responsibility as an operator. As the boat operator or crew, you want to be responsible for tying your cleat properly, not someone else.
