Authoritarian propaganda is full of empty promises of unity. Of uniting the nation under a leader who alone can fix it. Authoritarian expert Ruth Ben-Ghiat and I had this conversation BEFORE the events at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania, but the facts remain the same if not more poignant now. The shock and awe we’re seeing is a tactic to distract us from what this party plans to do to our country, our democracy, and to anyone who doesn’t pledge absolute fealty or fit into their limited box of “acceptable” Americans. What happened at the Trump rally changes nothing about who Trump is or what he will do to this country if he and his party gain power. If anything, Ruth’s warnings of how a strongman comes to power, are more dire now. We are witnessing the playbook of authoritarianism unfold, we can not simply go along.

This was one of the best conversations on this subject concerning this election. I am an independent voter who voted for Biden in 2020 and will vote for him and his administration again in November. I am also disturbed by the sharp right turn by Democrats and corporate media against Biden., what are they thinking? I am convinced that if “we the people” all unite and vote for the Biden/Harris team we can win this. I hate the thought of what will happen if we don’t.

I saw this with Trump and the GOP in 2016. I was sounding alarm to everyone I knew. I realized something really bad was coming when a life-long friend of mine who is like a brother lashed out at me. We had been friends and known one another for 40 years. He lashed out at me for going after Trump. We have not spoken since 2016. We'll he recently contacted me to telling me his father was k'ed in a freak accident. His father was a great man and a real Republican. I was heart broken by the lost of my friend, and I still am. It's crazy that we are living in a second CW. Brother against brother.
