I love Nia, she can see through people very easily. Even with Cass, her confrontation didn't go as planned cause Nia saw her vulnerability for Tom and was empathetic towards her. With Tom, she calls him out with empathy. Can't hate her... Also feel for Cass though.

While Dr. Natalie Cruz (the inestimable Justina Machado) and Dr. Dr. Ruben Soriano ( the very commanding Nestor Carbonell) bring by far the most gravitas to the show, through which they lift The Pulse from a Shondaland wannabe to a potential contender, there is NO DOUBT that Cole and Nia are by far the most intriguing, complex, and genuinely electrifying romantic couple in the series.

Both actors (Ash Santos and Jack Bannon) manage to evoke their characters' simultaneously startling, almost frightening erotic heat for one another and, at the same time, the strikingly moving mutual recognition, a depth of feeling, and shared longing for each other.

This longing enables these two characters (and actors) to humanize their edgy, not entirely trustworthy selves –- both Nia and Cole are dangerously beautiful, giving them the power to mesmerize those who probably should run as far away as possible from them. Both Nia and Cole are apex-hunter intelligent, like two beautiful but obviously potentially deadly panthers, and both Nia and Cole know they are panther smart AND mesmerizing. And yet, both Nia and Cole are wounded souls who have used their beauty, grace, and intelligence to take things from others (not the least of which is love) to which neither Nia nor Cole might have any moral entitlement.

And yet....Nia and Cole's very wounds, their troubling backstories, also imbue them with reckless, almost self-destructive courage.

Cases in point: Nia risks her life –– far beyond the call of duty of any paramedic –– for her potential patients, and Cole practically torches everything he has ever ferociously strove to achieve, all for Nia: this is the drive seared into him over his family's loss of social status and affluence, a loss so humiliating that it haunts him: it cannot but strike one that for all of Cole's ferocious striving, his manipulative womanizing, his skating on charm and advantage, he almost literally throws everything, literally everything, he has so rapaciously clawed for himself away solely for one woman: Nia.

The script has Cole's would-be, and overmatched love interest upbraid Cole by defending Nia as a "lovely person." No. Nia is a COMPELLING, complex, fascinating woman, and oh, so very clearly, so much more than a match for Cole. No wonder he's already in so deep for her.

Indeed, Cole's passion for Nia is so complete, so total that it will drive him not only to destroy almost everything he has ever sought...but also perhaps, just perhaps...redeem himself to become the person and doctor he knows, somewhere in him, that he should be.

These two, Nia and Cole, need no "shipping."

They already command our attention the way the supposed, and oh, so ho-hum lead romantic interests ( Drs. Danielle Sims and Xander Phillips) never will. And that, I would argue, is because the backstories that have both driven and wounded Nia and Cole, have also fueled their redemptive powers. Their electrifying erotic charge between them entwines with their emotional longing for one another as much as it does their recognition of each other. This heady, complex mix of mutual recognition, tender longing, and electrifying lust do not make this couple merely intriguing or entertaining. It makes them both so very human...and haunting.
