Fun fact, when chess was first invented, the pawns weren't allowed to move 2 squares on their first move, somewhere along the lines, the tempo of the game was deemed too slow, so they "buffed" the pawns to be able to jump 2 squares on first move, but they had to balance it by adding "en passant", en passant basically assumes that the pawn only made one move and is still technically on the 3rd or 6th row. This fact actually isn't fun at all

I like to think of it as a troops moving 2 forward but not all made it they need 1 more move so all get it 2 in front

if you want a real explanation, en peasant was added when the "pawns can move 2 squares" mechanic was introduced. The "2-square first move" was deemed unfair, as it can allow a pawn to skip the capture square of an adjacent enemy pawn. The solution is en peasant, which gives that enemy pawn a window of opportunity to capture the moving pawn. I think it's definitely a cool and necessary mechanic to balance the game.
