In this video I look at the final scene from the last episode of Batman Caped Crusader Season One, that teased their version of The Joker. While we only got a glimpse at him, there're quite a few clues as to what he could be like.

I'll look at some of the comic books that I think may inspire this version of the character, and talk about how this version of The Joker could differ to what we've seen before.

I have a theory about this Joker. That he will be cold, calculated, precise, and a genius. It’s suggested that he made the joker toxin himself, which I think is a nod to his intelligence. And instead of a crazy man who is trying to show the world his sense of humor, he will be a crazy man who is desperately trying to find humor in SOMETHING. Killing is the closest he can get, but it’s still not satisfying.
If this were to be the case, I’d love it if he never laughed or smiled- until much later on when he finally finds humor in something. That something being Batman. And I’d love his laugh to be deep, dark, and creepy, then turn maniacal.
But yeah that’s just my theory/ hope.

I wonder if this version of Joker will be more like his golden era counterpart of being a dour pragmatic scientific gangster.

I really hope it is John Demaggio. I loved his work on the Joker in the Red Hood animated movie. That Joker had more of a "Dry Wit" compared to other versions, and I'd love if that were the direction they took with this Joker. Imagine a more calm and collected Joker who always has a slight smile at the edge of his lips instead of a massive grin and has a more sarcastic sense of humor.

One thing that always stood out to me about The Joker’s first appearance was the line saying “A voice.. A toneless Voice drones”. It struck me as super eerie and I’d like to see that in this version of the joker

My assumption was that Joker laughing gas in the DCAU was lethal if someone didn’t get immediate medical help like with the laughing fish victims or Arthur Reeves. Other examples, like the guards in Holiday Knights, I just assumed they were dead but the team told the sensors that they weren’t so they could get it through.

Unhappy joker somehow sounds more terrifying.

As they want to be different but still rhyme with their previous work on BTAS, my theory for the creative team is that Harley will be fascinated with The Joker, but, like on a psychological professional level, and she will follow his crime-spree, to get inside his head.
Not as a lover, but still obsessed with him in a way. Like how Dr. Loomis became obsessed with Michael Myers in the Halloween films.

I really hope that this Joker resembles his original, more serious counterpart. Most shows focus on the "childish trickster" Joker and the "psychopath" Joker. Nobody has ever done a "serious criminal mastermind" Joker. Heath Ledger got close though.

I have an idea for this Joker's story, and it takes inspiration from the Invisible Man from BTAS

This Joker is a serial killer at the start after one bad day and left his family, but he is not insane, though he is still a theatrical killer.

But over season 2, he keeps accidentally inhaling minor amounts of his own laughing gas, causing him to mentally decline, including getting amnesia and physically becoming more dirty and deformed. He would even get scenes of him talking about his past but without any traces to a key character, as he is alone in the scenes.

He will have a lot of encounters, but a decent amount of his plans will fail.

When he has his finale with Batman, all the poisonous gadgets he made finally takes the toll on him, and through a trance, believes Batman is his polar opposite demon, and gets that heath ledger relation before he is arrested.

Finally, we see him without the makeup in Arkham, but with how deformed he got, they cant match him with a single criminal, making him a John Doe. So essentially his own actions delete his identity.

2:31 It's also an idea that has been done before. Telltale's second Batman season had Harley be the devil on Joker (or John Doe's) shoulder. In a way, she was the abuser, and he was the abused, a reversal of their traditional origin. I don't imagine that's the direction Caped Crusader will take, and if it does then it will likely go in a much different direction.

I'm extremely surprised with myself for saying this, but Joker is honestly the main reason I'll be checking out season 2. Before the first season came out I thought that if the writing was strong enough, Joker would not be necessary to appear from the start, but when I watched it and the writing never really grabbed me I felt the opposite and I felt his presence was greatly missed. I still couldn't tell if it was John DiMaggio or James Arnold Taylor who did the voice for him at the end.

I’m loving this series! I think this new joker will be a total menace and possibly one of the scariest versions of him

Technically speaking The Joker toxin in other series is incredibly lethal, the only reason we never see anyone die is usually because Batman has a antidote on hand.

I think the important question to ask is “is this change in service of telling an interesting story?” Imo if the answer is yes, then overall it’s a good thing.

As someone who adores OG Harley, I love the new Harley. She’s still in there, just remixed.

I hope that if this Joker and Harley interact, she would not be attracted to him. I really want major plots from BTAS to go on a different direction.
I would also like to see Victor Fries (if he's introduced to the show) not becoming Mr Freeze and actually being happily married to Nora.

I would like to see serious criminal mastermind Joker. It would be fresh take from clown prince, or serial killer.

Mastermind with ambitious goals and make him succeed at second season.

I always thought the way Jack Nicholson's Joker had his face stuck in a permanent grin was creepy in a cool twisted way, so if we got that with this version of the Joker would be awesome

I actually saw an interesting idea (which you similarly mentioned here) for this version of the Joker, that instead of branding himself as ‘the Joker’ he is instead labelled that by the press or the GCPD because of his method of killing, kinda giving a ‘Francis Dolarhyde’ esque version of the Joker.

I do like the idea of Harleen Quinzel being the reason the Joker exists mostly because it'd be a strong inversion of her character that would better work for the "food for thought" aspect. Like if Harleen didn't know that she created the Joker but was ultimately responsible for it, it'd give an interesting and much needed twist that the BTAS writers really would look for. Basically stating that she "doesn't exist in a vacuum, realistic events ultimately lead to them being loosely related, but she isn't DESIGNED to be related". That's one of the things I like about Caped Crusader. Unlike BTAS, they really are trying to go for more of a "This COULD happen in reality" path rather than a "Set the stage and roll with it". (e.g. Two face's gimmick relying on him being bipolar always felt like an "easy way out" to describe the character, but doesn't feel realistic, it's very cartoonish because it's easy to explain, but it also falls into the trap of making it seem like people with mental disorders ARE partially evil because of the mental disorder, and that's not always true. So the way they handled Harvey in Caped Crusader felt like it would be less offensive and prejudice towards those with bipolar disorder by being sensitive to the way Harvey doesn't make a gimmick of his two halves and instead it's a lot more subtle, like a side saying "I didn't deserve this!" and the other side saying "I could've avoided this...."making him far more sympathetic despite being a villain by default. That's kind of the way I feel we should look at Caped Crusader. They're not writing this for young kids who need everything spelled out anymore, as we've all grown up and are adults now and they want to show us that respect as long time batman fans.
