PROJECT ACOUSTIC -- 3D Audio 'Wavetracing' Engine from Microsoft [Unity & Unreal Engine 5]

Not actually audio raytracing, think of it more like Wavetracing. Microsoft Project Acoustics is an audio simulation engine for Unreal Engine and Unity for rendering more realistic audio in your 3D environment.

This is more important than raytracing for immersion, I'm really looking forward to listening to this in future projects.

This will be huge for vision impaired gamers! Imaging the types of experiences that could be made from scratch or made more accessible by filling out the audio scape. Very exciting this sort of technology is out in the world right now and will only get better from here.

As a music producer learning game dev this is SO cool! I wonder how it determines material types for the room acoustics?

Or even calculates room size. Reverb is tricky to get right as the acoustics in the shape of a room AND material type affect what you hear.

Super cool.

Good stuff!!
I've used this type of audio simulation, except it was all done in hardware and cost $5, 000 USD per channel. I'm going to definitely look into this for my game!

I'm so glad people are working on projects like this, Audio is as important as graphics, as they're both sensory inputs and if one or the other isn't fooled into thinking the sound or picture is real enough then immersion is broken. So many times in games has my total immersion been broken by bad or questionable audio which takes my attention and focus away from the actual scene.

Been thinking a while that as we get closer a and closer to the point of diminishing returns with light raytracing (for videogames) that audio will be the next frontier, physics based audio seems like a field that got left in the backburner for a while, even with siggraph the last paper is from 2019, really exited to see big players like Microsoft switching attention into the field.

I thought, uhu raytracing for audio, probably a minor thing. However this can save TONS of money and time on audio engineers while also getting more realistic results!

This is such a major gamechange. I wonder what the hit on performance is.

No more, "a door opened somewhere on the map". This is great!

I wrote an undergraduate paper on this topic in 2014. I bit off a bit more than I could chew, audio can pass through material, the wavelengths can bend around corners etc. I’m very impressed to see this type of technology coming to production.

I've been following this project for years and I'm really happy it's gaining traction again. Hope they start pushing it further now.

I visualized this so many years ago :) I'm glad it is finally here

This sounds quite promising. I am happy more attention is being given to acoustics in digitial worlds. Sabine would be proud of us.

Finally a real challenge to Thief 1 Supremacy!!
Seriously games have neglected sound for so long. Glad this is happening at last.

Thank you for this video! Waiting for Realtime Path Tracing & Audio wave tracing in next-gen games.

This will be amazing for large scale VR

This is awesome, I’ve been dreaming of this in Motorsport games for ages now. The old f1 cars used to bounce sound off the buildings and surroundings in a really unique way.

This is really cool! This and visual ray tracing are really going to raise the bar on the next generation of games

This will become vital for my current project - a multi-channel presentation of an album.

I think too many people consider realistic audio a "solved problem" and nobody talks about it which is why new tech like this gets me excited for the actual "next-gen" in environmental sound design

I was literally just searching for this type of thing yesterday for a project idea of mine. Love it when this happens haha
