I tried an experiment, I translated the Ride of the Rohirrim into Afrikaans. The aim was to see how it would look if you got rid of the Latin influences. (I kept to Tolkien's rules and didn't play around with his names). It was brilliant, I have never read prose in the Afrikaans language like that, it worked extremely well.

Alliterative verse is difficult...

What Amazon is doing is more than just desecrating LotRs, but Tolkien himself. Its more than just a movie or book. Tolkien fans take this seriously.

Im new to your channel, but I can see your passion for Tolkiens work. Im glad I found you here on YT.

Thanks Mate! Many blessings from Pennsylvania.

My friend, your grasp of English is wonderful. Apart from your slight accent, one would think you were born, raised & educated in our best public schools & universities! Bravo Sir. Tolkien himself would be proud of you! 👏🏻🏅

Most of my life, I read Tolkien's work quietly in my head. But when I bought the audio books, I was amazed how beautiful the written words were. There was no misplaced words that I could tell, every word mattered and beautifully crafted. It made me realized that his work was meant to be read aloud.

This is why I have always wanted to do a course on Tolkien or a deep look into literature. My brain is dumb so I need guidance to understand better the styles, structures, and different literary devices. Loved the vid! though I need to watch it a few more times to grasp it better. 😝

Very good. I think you’ve helped me to appreciate the ‘Fall of Arthur’ a little more as you have given me a little more insight into the precision with which this poem was constructed. Keep up the good work, Sir!

I read the Hobbit in high-school for the first time. I never read LotRs, but Im currently listening to the audiobook of Fellowship.

This video is very interesting. I always knew Tolkien was a genius, but the way you presented it, it's beyond what I would have imagined.

I got my hands on the HoME set a few months ago, and I’ve been reading it almost daily ever since. I’ve haven’t really enjoyed reading poems in the past, especially during my high school English days (which is where I had to read most of the poems), mostly because they were all these post-modern style poems. However, I really enjoy reading Tolkien’s poems, from the ones in LotR to the ones I have come across in HoME, to the long epics such as the Lay of Leithian and the Lay of the Children of Húrin. I am not an Old English/European literature academic, so I wasn’t familiar with all details and mechanics behind the composition of these types of poems, but watching this video has really made me appreciate the “science”, if you will, behind Tolkien’s poetry and made me appreciate Tolkien even more.

I’ve also only recently discovered your channel (maybe ~3 weeks ago), but I am really enjoying the content. Keep up the good work!

Amazing and fascinating video thank you.
Tolkien was a master at painting with words and sounds, every word put to paper considered and controlled. Every verse or chapter a masterpiece.

I don't think that there is any writer - dead or alive - that could match the dedication of Tolkien towards his Work.

Many thanks for this, your delivery and insight are appreciated. It is with great wonder that Tolkien outside of his legendarium was in his own right a scholar of the highest renown and sadly outside of those that know and are prepared to learn is very much overlooked. An excellent paper that you presented.

In college I finally got an audiobook version of Lord of the Rings, so much better when you can listen to the words

Such an enjoyably educational video. Not only is your scholarship so clearly manifest, but you have a real skill as a presenter. You are a natural. If you ever have an opportunity to write and present a television documentary on these subjects, I believe you would be very successful. If I am like most of your audience, even though I was not that familiar with the technical terms and lacked ready context for their detailed discussion, your narrative carried through those more technical sections without losing much momentum.

I suspect your growing audience here on your Youtube channel will also be most interested not only in more of your scholarly writings and readings, but also the fiction you indicate you are working on as well.

Well done!

This was excellent. Not boring at all. Plan to map out the alliteration of 'Nimrodel' due to a hunch.

This is wonderful. I'm not a Tolkien scholar. I wouldn't even consider myself all that knowledgeable about his life and influences. However, I do love his works, so I love learning fascinating things about his creative background. This is quite interesting and I'm looking forward to more. Thank you for making these accessible to us.
