Culturing Fruit Flies with Lindsy

Rep-Cal Ultrafine Calcium with Vitamin D3:

Excelsior:

Directions:

1. Mix ¾ cup of boiling RO Water/bottled water with ½ cup of Josh’s Frogs Fruit Fly media, or follow packaging directions for Repashy SuperFly.

2. Add a handful of excelsior to the cup.

3. Cover the cup and wait for it to cool.

4. Add 50-100 flies. Cultures should be kept below 85 degrees and will start producing flies in 12-14 days. If the cultures seem to be drying out (or molding), spray with RO Water and use more water when making cultures.

Josh’s Frogs recommends keeping the cultures in a plastic drawer system to prevent them from drying out. This media contains a mold inhibitor. Shake well before using.

followed directions and got mold in cultures. I stirred the culture after because a large amount of it was dry on bottom as well. But left on shelf and hadnt used in a couple days and molded.

After creating a culture and waiting the two weeks, does this culture continue to breed for an extended period of time as long as you don’t exhaust all the flies each time you do a feeding? And should you periodically water it by spraying every couple of weeks to keep the moisture level up? Thanks!

Why do you say add 6 ounces instead of volume measurement for the water. 3/4 of a cup is 6 ounces according to google.

I received my order of fruit flies, it appears it wasn't kept in an upright position, because the stuff on the bottom has covered the sides of the container, my questions is does the affect the hatching process?
