“You have a product that's killing people.” US senators on Wed (Jan 31) grilled leaders of the biggest social media companies and demanded legislative action after accusing platforms of negligent oversight. Are tech giants doing enough to protect children online?

My kids, now young adults, grew up in this social media era and they didn’t live on their phones. I had their passwords and monitored all their accounts. My kids never snorted condoms, ate Tide Pods, set themselves on fire, hanged themselves, choked on marshmallows or cinnamon, smothered themselves, took a bottle of Benadryl, or were lured away be perverts. They never participated in any of those idiotic trends. Parents have to be accountable to their kids’ actions. However, I’m not saying there is not a need for improvements with these platforms.

A bunch of old people with little or no understanding of social media, who failed to regulate SM when it was in its infancy. Now they're pointing the finger at social media to blame them for suicides and exploitation.

These algorithm need to be revised to minimize hate fear and self harm. Can they really be held accountable for what individuals do to themselves and others IRL. ?

Sure ask the tech companies to compensate our failures in parenting. Goes both ways guys...my take from this. Social Media Platforms will have to better tweak their algorithms to prevent such acts but WE are responsible for protecting OUR KIDS.
