I recently visited Pondicherry and had a great time. It's a clean fun small-ish city right on the Bay of Bengal. I took the Pondy Wake Up Cycle tour and we rode through the French Quarter and the other parts of the city. I also did my own research and found out 52 facts that I would want to know before I visited Pondicherry for the first time.
Facts about Pondicherry:
1. The official name is Puducherry
2. Nicknamed "Paris of the South"
3. "India's Little France"
4. "Europe of India"
5. "French Riveria of the East"
6. The Best time to visit is January.
7. Most people visit from December through April
8. Monsoon season is later than most of India in October and November.
9. August and September are hot and a bit rainy. August has a lot of celebrations though.
10. Pondicherry's Liberation Day is August 16
11. Sri Aurobindo's birthday is August 15
12. 3% of the population is Christian and there are some beautiful churches
13. Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church is over 100 years old
14. It's also built in the neo-Gothic architectural style
15. 6% of the population is Muslim
16. The Moullah Mohammed Mosque is the largest mosque in the city
17. It was shown in the Life of Pi movie
18. Hollywood director M. Night Shyamalan was born in Pondicherry
19. It was mentioned in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book
20. Some traditional houses are 1 acre in size
21. They are built with 2 rosewood or teakwood doors
22. They are built with 4 pillars that are only one log
23. Goubert Market is where locals buy fruits, flowers, vegetables and seafood
24. The first block was built in 1962
25. Pondicherry is the only place to scuba dive on India's East Coast
26. Promenade beach is great in the morning, the road is closed before 9 am
27. The beach has the third-largest Gandhi statue in the world
28. Pondicherry has some of the lowest alcohol taxes
29. Bars and Restaurants close by 11 PM though
30. Less than 5 miles away is Auroville, the experimental town
31. You can meet an elephant in Pondicherry at the Ganesh Temple
