With her clear jump of 5.05 m, Isinbaeva prolonged her Olympic title reign from Athens 2004. Her current world record is 5.06 m outdoors, set in Zurich in August 2009.

In a post jump interview, she talked about just how difficult this is..multiple injuries, almost gave up numerous times, her coach kept the faith and told her to never give up and have confidence in yourself. Easier said than done. Every world class athlete goes through this. It's very very tough but that is the price to pay for glory. This is why she was so emotional.

I am proud I was there at the Bird's Nest that night. It was a real show of one actress and 80 thousand spectators (I mean eye-witnesses plus many millions on live TV of course). It was already late and by the time shown in the video all the events were over, but every spectator stayed for an opportunity to watch this historic moment. Elena really took some time at the centre stage, first she won the gold and then she was given three attempts for the record. The first two were unsuccessful, yet people in the stands stayed on believing in the magic of the night. By the time of the last attempt you could physically feel the pressure even as a spectator and I cannot imagine what she must have felt. Probably she just couldn't disappoint so many people. Or may be she was sure she could make a miracle when she wanted to. I don't know but for me the successful record jump felt then like a logical grand finale of a brilliant show.
