Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders: Review/Demo

Suggestions on which powders to use for different skin tones, types and for different purposes:

FAIR SKIN: Diffused can work as an all-over face powder for fair skin. Ethereal can also work if you're very fair but generally makes a nice highlight. Mood is an incredibly beautiful blush (especially for cooler complexions and natural red-heads). Dim can be used to add warmth to the skin or contour (Dim is the least "glowy" so it works as a contour shade for the lightest complexions). Luminous can be used to add warmth and color but it's the most frosted of all the powders and Radiant light can easily look orange on fair skin (especially cool-toned, fair skin).

MEDIUM SKIN: For most medium skin tones Dim works well as a light-weight setting powder (honestly it's probably the most universally flattering and according to Hourglass, it's also one of their best sellers). Mood can work well to add a barely there glow on most medium and olive complexions. Diffused and Ethereal can both work as highlighters but Diffused has a touch more warmth to it. Luminous can also be used as a highlight but again, it's got a lot of shine (most medium skin-tones won't notice much of a color with Luminous, mostly just shine). Radiant can give medium skin tones a sun-kissed glow with a lot of warmth, especially on warm-toned skin. DARK SKIN: Radiant and Luminous are your best options. Both have a lot of shine in them so they won't make a good satin finish setting powder but if you don't mind the glow, Radiant Light looks beautiful on deep skin tones. Between Ethereal and Diffused as a highlighter, I'd reach for Diffused first; in my experience the pale yellow doesn't look chalky but (as with all of these) I'd recommending testing it out first. Dim is the most matte of the bunch and could look chalky on dark skin but its still work looking at -- The only shade to really be careful of is Mood. The lavender/plum tones it in often read as ashy on dark skin.

MATURE SKIN: Any of the shades work well, if you stay away from frost than avoid Radiant and Luminous Light as they ARE the most frosted of the bunch. These aren't glittery though, even if you see some in the pan, it doesn't translate to the face and if you like glow then every powder is an option.

PHOTOGRAPHY: I haven't noticed any issues with flash-back in flash photography (the skin appearing lighter than it actually is). The glow that you see in person translates well in photos (think glow, not glitter).

PROFESSIONAL MUAs: If you're a professional makeup artist and looking to add these to your kit, you'll get the most used out of Dim -- it's versatile and works across most skin tones. Diffused and Radiant are the next ones I'd recommend as both a highlight (Diffused) and sun-kissed bronze for medium skin and natural glow for dark skin (Radiant). Mood is my personal favorite of the six but I think it's best suited for fairer skin tones so it's one of the least versatile powders.

FINAL THOUGHTS: These are definitely a product in the same category as Guerlain's Meteorites. Expect a "lit from within" glow, a "barely there" finish and a "what's different about your skin?" kind of look. Comparing them to Meteorites these are definitely more pigmented but compared to other pressed powders, bronzers and blushes these are hardly pigmented at all. In my experience Meteorites are also more glittery, less glowing and are perfumed whereas the Hourglass powders have no noticeable fragrance.

Hourglass says - and I think that it's worth repeating - that these are "free of parabens, talc, fragrance, nano-particles and gluten." I know from experience that it can be hard to find gluten-free cosmetics (and most companies don't bother testing for it).
