i think one of the most game changing features was... sprinting. before, minecraft was a game of survival and mobs walked the same pace as the player. there was a challenge in surviving, and players relied on having the right equipment and bases to survive. now with sprinting (and hunger), players could run around without much danger from mobs. it changed the challenge and goal of the game: old minecraft was to survive and new minecraft was to conquer. this is why i feel like before sprinting was such a different game to after.

Beta 1.8 no contest. That's when the whole focus of the game shifted from gathering resources and building (mining and crafting) to focusing more on the combat, exploring, and adventuring.

0.12 added the Nether, hunger, sprint & crouch, enchanting, critical hits, potion brewing (+ ingredients), iron golems, etc… All in one update. Also it removed the classic Nether reactor core functionality. Rip
