1.12.2 has a lot of mods and modpacks dedicated to it.

Edit: I noticed a lot of y'all in the replies mentioned 3 other popular versions for modding, so I'll list them here. Alongside the aforementioned 1.12.2, we got 1.7.10, 1.16.5, and 1.20.1.

For anyone wondering why, the reason why 1.12.2 was modded so much was due to the old item ID system (which made modding and data packs far easier to make) being removed just after that update

I like how everyone in the comments immediately went to talk about the versions of Minecraft that are the most used for mods, really nice to see these days.

I would actually like to point out the similarity's in the versions he noted. the first is the latest update as newer players tend to play with their Minecraft launcher automatically on the newest release profile, the second being Minecraft's second most controversial update being the combat update which caused a divide in the community mostly between older and newer players. The third being a update that heavily affected the speedrunning community a huge part of Minecraft, the fourth being the first Minecraft controversy that splitting older and newer players when it was added. I think this showers history wise each major controversy update will cause a split and make a version that people will stick too which is neet.
