IP Classification helps with:
1. Protecting against accidental contact with the motor internals
2. Preventing solid objects from entering (like dust or small rocks)
3. Preventing water from entering
IP Ratings are given in:
First digit describes protection against solids
Second digit describes protection against liquids
Most washdown motors will start with IP65 (dustproof and protection against low pressure water jets)
IP66 will cover high pressure water jets
IP67 adds coverage against temporary immersion in water
IP68 is the same as IP67, and these motors can be continually operated in water
IP69 also protects against high pressure, high temperature water jets like those found in steam cleaning applications.
NEMA4 is roughly equivalent to IP65 or IP66
NEMA4X adds protection against corrosion from harsh chemicals
