MARIUS:
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone.

Here they talked of revolution.
Here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about `tomorrow'
And tomorrow never came.

From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On the lonely barricade at dawn.

Oh my friends, my friends forgive me

(The ghosts of those who died on the barricade appear)

That I live and you are gone.
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.

Phantom faces at the window.
Phantom shadows on the floor.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.

(The ghosts fade away)

Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more

Who else cried their eyes off in theatre?

Easily one of the most emotional songs of the entire set. And while we have the book to thank, its pleasing to see a story where the common man doesn't win against the greater power and where dreams wind up broken and foolish. which of course the play uses as a strenght in the finale.

I went to go see the london version of this in december and as much as i was already crying by this point, this was the song that broke me. Not only was the singing beautiful, the staging was sublime, with all Les Amis standing behind Marius and he sung the last verse i could barely see through my tears. Honestly one of the best in the whole musical

There are moments that the words don't reach
There is suffering too terrible to name

This is sad, but in the book he was very ill for like a year and doesn't remember them. He doesn't remember the rebellion, his friends, his best friend, when Éponine saved his life (I'm not an ponine x Marius shipper, but she still saved his life) and only remembers Valjean (who saved his life) because Thénardier shoved him a part of his cloat which he ripped off and it was late already.
I think that yes, it's sad, but the book is even sadder.

I don't know what it is about this song, that no matter where or when I hear it, how often I hear it or how ridiculously often I've seen Les Mis, I always cry at least a bit.

I wonder why this has so few views compared to some of the songs. I thought this was one of the more well-known from the show
