Watching the partisan chasm widen since 2016 has been both sobering and instructive. The majority of Americans were mostly unaware of how many in this country harbored deep resentment towards many of the social norms built since WW2. We watched in disbelief as a candidate for President mocked war heros, minorities, progressive international relations as just a few examples. But to see this same person enjoy significant support from a certain segment of our society sent shock waves that will reverberate for a generation. We have seen the real enemy, and it is us. Those in the USA who strive for unity and adherence to humanitarian values must find ways to create bridges to retrieve those who act out of ignorance and/or desperation. One of those bridges takes the form of these high-quality interviews where very informed perspectives can be distributed, considered and hopefully incorporated into the whole of society. Thank you to The MunkDebates.

National service is a really great idea. It gets young people to meet each other across cultures to work together and learn how similar they are to each other, but also to foster relationships while also creating infrastructure that will pay back over generations.

David Brooks gives the audience a 5 Star Interview on all fronts. Thank you for finding a moderate Republican who has his fingers on the Pulse of America.

I lived in Indiana and Minnesota. Got jobs on handshakes. Lived in hotels. Threw my duffle bag of clothes into my truck. I've seen America. I have zero regrets . it was an interesting unique and painful part of my life. But at 36. I not for one second regret doing it. Leaving. Moving. Running away. Going to something you don't know. Breaking free. Changing.

I love the way David Brooks bases his analyses on history & data. He makes so much sense when he describes what's happening currently, then takes everything further to predict the future in a way that makes me feel that I can personally deal with this and move forward. Thank you David Brooks!

i agree we have moved away from the 'Walton's (tv show)(three generations living together in one house) to single parents. we have lost cohesion.

Thanks for mentioning Sen. Klobuchar even though she has taken herself out of the running. I like her because she’s practical and just wants to get stuff done. I really like her take on education—match education to jobs. We don’t all need a four-year college degree. I made $75k/year with my associate degree in nursing which was more that my husband who has a PhD.

Housing would be a great project for young people. So needed and could solve so much.

Historians in the future will mark Reagan era as the crucial point which plunged America to this mess. I think it primarily happened due to the arrogance of winning the cold war and the misplaced belief that 'free markets' made them win it. But whats lost in this communism- capitalism debate is that, USA was much more amendable to adopt good polices of Soviet union than other way around. FDR increased the role of State, Trade Unions were made powerful, Higher taxes on the Rich etc. I thinks its the ability to adapt and not going overboard with an ideology is what made the USA win the Cold war. But Neoliberals have learnt the wrong lesson from history. I am an Indian and thats what I feel as an outside observer. I would like to know what you guys think.

Among the things I like about David are that he tends to respect science/expertise and that, in spite of everything, he can can often find the optimistic/hopeful aspects of an issues. So a bit of a shame to see him express the cynical and unproven view that people are less motivated to work if there is no threat of having income taken away. A position that isn't supported by research.

The only comment I completely disagree with is his statement that we love
and want to keep our private healthcare. No way. I preferred living in England and France with their healthcare system. US private insurance is a stressful, expensive and ineffective way of doing healthcare.
