Why Did Yelena Make This Face?

In this video i will talk about why Yelena made this face. This scene from Episode 18 of Season 4 of the Attack on Titan anime raised a lot of questions and also left fans confused as to the meaning of Yelena’s face and Armin’s reaction.

MAPPA killed it with this panel, the manga was good obviously but the extra details they put here in Yelena’s face made it 1000 times more terrifying

It's easy:
Armin had, for the past days, only prison food to eat. When he was finally freed, the first thing he did was to let a fart out. Thats why he was screaming that loud in front of everyone. He didn't want the other to hear the fart comming out. But the smell was still there and when Yelena xame from behind (because of armins screaming) she *smelled* it. Prison food is no joke.
At least she didn't embarrass him in front of the others and kept it a secret. She is a true friend.

What's cool is I'm pretty sure I know where Isayama got his inspiration for this: there's a historical picture of a german nazi taken the moment he found out the same photographer he was just speaking to was jewish. The sheer hate on his face was a sight to see

The way I took it was that Yelena had just had these people locked up because they wanted to oppose the Euthanasia plan. She had not ordered them released, so when they appeared behind her and Armin started talking up a storm, he initial reaction was to assume he was rallying against her and made *That Face* - then a moment later she actually registered that he was saying "Let's help Eren get to Zeke" and because Yelena WANTS to trust the Eldians, she took those words at face value and smiled, asking them to 'please help them'.

Basically, Yelena caught Armin lying.

I have a slightly different interpretation. In the past, Armin used his words to manipulate Bertholdt into giving an emotional reaction, which ended up helping Armin and friends. The next time Armin meets Bertholdt (in Shiganshina), Armin tries to use his words into provoking a reaction from Bertholdt by saying that he's the only one who can save Annie. But this 2nd time, Bertholdt can see through the manipulation. I think this is how it worked between Armin and Yelena too.

The first time Armin talks to Yelena in prison, he uses his words to manipulate her into believing that he's sympathetic to her cause. Then, during the second time Armin talks with Yelena present, he attempts to use his words to make him and his friends appear still sympathetic to her cause as they help Eren. But because it's the SECOND time Yelena is hearing Armin being manipulative with his language, she's able to see right through it. When she does, she makes that face.

i've watched anime for one hell of a long time and throughout all of the anime's i've watched, there has not been a face that's scared and haunted me this badly. I still think about it everyday.

I thought it was cuz she knew Armin was smart and the fact that he just immediately agreed to work with Onyankopon/Yelena, as well as suspiciously cried because he was "moved" just screamed "im doing this to disguise another plan"
She knew he had another goal and was threatening him to make sure he knew that she knew and he was to keep himself in check.

Armin's titan is pretty much unquestionably the strongest but he can never really use it because he will kill everyone he loves if they're within 1km of him.

I believe that's most of the reason, yea. But somehow I also believe it's because they want to help "Eren" rather than save "Zeke". This for Eren's sake rather than the euthanasia plan. Yelena and the Yeagerists don't exactly have the same goal... Yelena is on board with Zeke's plan and supports it 100% (a plan almost none of the Yeagerists know about), while the Yeagerists trust in Eren and the rebellion to bring about a new dawn.

I think between this and Flock's meme face in Part 1, I think Mappa just does it once every season for the lols.

This moment was probably my favorite of the whole show. I was actually in tears the first time i saw it had it repeating for a solid 10 minutes because of how random it felt
