Learn Greatest Common Factor (GCF) & Least Common Multiple (LCM) - [7]

In this lesson, we will learn how to find the greatest common factor (gcf) and least common multiple (lcm) of two numbers. These ideas are important when working with fractions, finding common denominators to add fractions, and other operations with fractions and numbers. The GCF is found by finding the factors of numbers and looking to find the largest (greatest) factor common between two numbers. Factors are simply numbers that can be divided into a number. To find the least common multiple, we just find the multiples of the given numbers and look for the smallest (least) multiple common to both lists.

Having to review mathematics after 35 years to pass the Acuplacer test for entry into new training. OMG I hated math...you make it easier and fun with understanding. No one ever explained it like you. If my teachers had, my life path would have had a different focus. Thank you and many blessings your way!

Mr. Jason Gibson is an excellent math teacher. He has a way to explain things that, as long as youare willing to learn math (as opposed to be hostile to math), his teaching is easy to follow. He is never vague or intimidating; and he never talks down on you or make you feel bad. Those are the hallmarks of a good teacher. James Chan, Ph.D., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Another tip to keep in mind when creating a list of factors for a number: Once you've reached the halfway point you can stop, because a number can't have any *natural* factors greater than half its size - with the exception of the greater of its *identical* factors (1 and the number itself) and we already know as a given that the number is a factor of itself.

A prime number is a number has two factors only, one multiplied by another number such as 2, 3, 5, 7, 11… If a number has more than two factors, they are called composite number. It’s a good idea to memorize prime numbers because they are very useful for solving fraction problems such as reducing fractions and solving algebra problems.
