It should be noted with the cave paintings the boys didn't leave the place for a week and then come back with a Priest. They arranged a watch over the cave and camped out protecting until someone with enough cloute could get the attention of the proper professionals to research and preserve the site.

Learned something new today about the term "prehistoric". I assumed it means a time before writing was invented anywhere but actually it makes more sense referring to the introduction/invention of writing in a specific place.

I remember reading in National Geographic when Otzi was discovered. I would love to see a deeper dive into Otzi's story and circumstances.

The Ötzi memorial is so wild for me, like just imagine him and some buddies 5000 years in the past thinking about the future. Could you actually imagine that one of you would be remembered in someway so far into the future?

Two people who studied the Lascaux caves were recently guests on YouTube's Event Horizon with John Michael Godier, if you're interested in a proper analysis of the cave paintings, including the likelihood that the paintings were used as a calendar of hunting seasons for the different animals.

I recall my history teacher from high-school talking about the Olmec heads and statues. He was a mam who played football while wearing leather helmets. He taught all kinds of stuff. Also had me do a report on the Bosnian conflict as it was 1998 and that was fresh history.

I like to believe he helped promote my passion to learn about history.

From the development of writing to dietary habits, tools, and art forms of our ancestors, exploring the prehistoric period provides valuable insights into our ancient past.

Of all of the giant stone moving I've tried to wrap my head around, I find this one the easiest to rationalize. They carved giant boulders into balls, rolled them where they needed to go, then carved it into a head. To do it any other way would be insanity. This is the only time I've thought that's plausible. Still, ridiculously time consuming, and impressive.

Seeing Lascaux was always a sort of holy grail journey to me, yet I'm happy it's protected now even if I'm never see it and feel the chill on my skin. Luckily it's been extensively documented. I've got the book of the last photographs from the 90s.

There's so much of the middle east, Turkey and the -istans I ache to see. The best I think I can hope for is the area being stable enough to send my grandadkids.

It's sad that they didn't prevent Ötzi from disintegrating. When they found him, he was almost totally intact. He's skin had visible tattoos.
Now he's almost just a skeleton. 😦
They should have preserved him in some kind of liquid to stop him from disintegrating.

Ötzi looks more lively than some politicians and it’s sad.

The cave paintings are great and all, but more importantly, did they find the dog?

Cave paintings can be thought of as an ancient form of pictionary as the depictions are a way to better portray a message. This just shows that they had used a very basic language but still used visual stimuli to tell a story. They also used carved wooden pieces shaped like animals like dolls.

The Museum of Archeology and Anthropology in Mexico is amazing to see in person. You could spend days there looking at the history of Mexico and the surrounding areas.
