"You were too good for him" is kind of iffy. Sometimes if the person is feeling at a very specific type of low, where they feel like they were lesser than their ex, it can actually help to say 'you're too good for him / you're better than him, ' as a means to raise that type of self esteem - but it's better said as a present tense rather than a past tense. It's kind of a situation where you've gotta really feel out and listen to the words of the person, and see where they're at with it, and also what kind of person they are. I can definitely say, sometimes I'd rather just hear I'm better than X asshole person in my life, rather than hearing they lost a lot, but that's usually when I'm angry rather than sad, and I just want to get over X asshole in a snap.

Some good tips. But some alternative phrases really sound like a more coded way to say the same. At least my reaction would be similar, knowing what the hidden meaning really is.

"Why didn't you choose me" vs. "This is unfair", doesn't sound that different to me. Asking that in a non challenging way can be difficult.

Ma'am I have actually got the line "you are too good for him" and to date I cherish that compliment from my best friend. She was absolutely right ! I truely believe that I was way better than that guy and he didn't deserve to give me the cold shoulder that he did 😊😊😊
