London's 'extreme' commuters - BBC London

Londoners' daily commutes are now the longest in the country, according to analysis from the TUC trade union. At an average of one hour and 21 minutes, people in London are spending 23 minutes longer travelling than those in other parts of the UK. Rail users face the longest journeys, but some people are now taking back the time used on commuting and working more flexible hours, sometimes from home.

At least today there are smartphones to play with. When I commuted in London they had not yet been invented.

We've channeled so much public and private investment and energy into London over the years that people have little choice but to go to the capital if they want to progress in their careers and have opportunities, not to mention have access to culture and amenities. If we would just devote the same level of prioritization to issues in the other cities - namely Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle, Liverpool etc. - we'd spread out the demand for housing and create the basis for a first class intranational transportation system, not the mess we have now.

Best thing I ever did was leaving the city of 5 million I was raised in for a city of 150, 000. I'd go even smaller if I could with work.

This is the same problem in any big city. There's nothing extreme about this. Big city = lot of people = very busy when everyone travels at the same times in the morning/evening.

I commute from Reading to Canary Wharf, it can be 50 minutes from my front door to my desk. Shocked to hear the average is 1 hour 20 minutes.

No thanks... I rather live in my tiny town in Norway. But I do love London for shopping and eating.

I used to be a commuter then I moved to Cardiff best move of ever done. I can afford a house and start paying off comfortably. People in Cardiff complain when there is 15 minutes of traffic I just sit back and think you don't know London and how lucky you are.

1 thing that came out that, pandemic is something i have been saying for years, that home workingm can work to cleaer this type of scramble mentioned here, an for those that have to places to work, having fixed hours instead of feasible is a disaster that causes, traffic jams, an full buses, an standing room only on trains, an fixed hours shops, means a rush to get there before closed, with mass congestion, eveybody Leaving at once when they do close, an encourages out of town shopping.

This commute headache is now in the past as many people are now working from home due to the pandemic.

Now that I've retired it's a relief not to have to commute in London any more and I use buses more too. Travelling underground on crowded tubes is not pleasant but at least the transport in London is efficient (apart from privatised railways), though expensive compared to other European cities.
