Chełmno or Kulmhof was the first of Nazi Germany's extermination camps and was situated 50 km (31 mi) north of Łódź, near the village of Chełmno nad Nerem. Following the invasion of Poland in 1939, Germany annexed the area into the new territory of Reichsgau Wartheland. The camp, which was specifically intended for no other purpose than mass murder, operated from December 8, 1941, to April 11, 1943, parallel to Operation Reinhard during the deadliest phase of the Holocaust, and again from June 23, 1944, to January 18, 1945, during the Soviet counter-offensive. In 1943, modifications were made to the camp's killing methods as the reception building had already been dismantled.

The photos you display are unfortunately not those of actual gas vans. They have been interpreted as such but it's not the truth. No photographs of gas vans exist. I would refer you to the extensive work of Cameron Munro. The two gas vans used at Chelmno were not adapted from that model. The truck is a transport vehicle. Its been assumed over time that as it was found at a depot in the vicinity of Kolo in the Warthe(pronounced Var-ta) land, an annexed area of Western Poland, then it must be one, however the actual vans were all reassigned as other vehicles. Also its not a Sauer, the only make of vehicle adapted as a gas van to be employed by Sonderkommando Lange at the killing centre. The SS abandoned the use of vans after fixed chambers were more lethal, more cost effective and more victims could be eliminated.

Did anyone else notice the trucks/buses the Nazis used?! They were ALL based on a GENERAL MOTORS-INSPIRED design, and built in Russelsheim, where GM maintained a manufacturing plant....
