The Mind Flayer isn't one specific character, but a species that is very nefarious in the DnD universe. They make people into slaves by stripping down their minds as well as eating peoples' brains for nourishment.
At the start of the game you have been kidnapped by Mind Flayers and been placed on a flying ship operated by them, that can hop between planes and dimensions.
