Hyperion Cantos: What Happened to Earth?

The Hyperion Cantos begins hundreds of years in our future. Humankind at this time inhabits hundreds of worlds, many of which are connected by Farcaster technology, which allows for instantaneous travel between planets. Many science fiction series involving space-faring human civilization often depict the earth as having been destroyed long ago or lost within the mists of time. This is true in the Hyperion cantos as well but with some twists and turns. Earth had long since vanished after the event known as the Big mistake.

Hyperion was the only sci-fi book I cried at while reading, the story of the scholar and his daughter totally crashed me, especially since I read this book a few months after I became the father of two daughters myself. A wonderful trilogy that left a strong imprint in my head.

These videos really make me want to try out this series. On that note, I really like how in much of sci-fi there are references to others pieces of literature or even pop culture. A dialogue of sorts with the wider gestalt of the period. I find that absolutely fascinating, and its one of the elements that bind me to the genre.

I just wanted to tell you that because of your videos I started reading the series and a couple of days ago I finished book four. Last book was a tough one. Not really as solid and lots of filler I felt with all the catholic details. I felt it was a tad unbelievable but it ended well and I will forgive the other stuff.
