The U.S. Ambassador to Russia's residence is located on a secluded side street in a historic section of Moscow, not far from the famed Old Arbat Street and the 18th century Church of the Savior on the Sands. Built in 1913 for a wealthy local merchant, the house became the residence of the U.S. Ambassador in 1933.

Today the residence is called Spaso House, a name that is well recognized in Moscow as synonymous with the U.S. Embassy. For 80 years, U.S. Ambassadors have taken care of this neo-classically designed home, which has a special place in the city's architectural history. We invite you to take a closer look at the architecture and design of Spaso House.

The artwork clearly reflects the very progressive taste of the ambassador. It is a distinctly separate feature in this house of a very different era and style.

After reading Lydia Kirk's "Postmarked Moscow, " it was nice to see what I have been imagining from her detailed descriptions of life in the US Embassy when her husband was U.S. Ambassador there in 1949. This is a treasure. Now, I wonder what the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC looks like?!
