(March 4, 2025 - Old Town, Istanbul)

Today, we wandered through the heart of Istanbul: Sultanahmet Square (Sultanahmet Meydanı), a crossroads of empires where East meets West. 🇹🇷✨

From the Hagia Sophia, once a Byzantine cathedral and Ottoman mosque, now a stunning symbol of Istanbul’s layered history, to the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque). We soaked in the echoes of centuries beneath the towering obelisks of the ancient Hippodrome, once the beating heart of Constantinople’s chariot races.

Sultanahmet Square itself is steeped in history. We admired the Theodosius Obelisk, originally from Egypt’s Temple of Amun-Ra and brought to Istanbul in the 4th century by Emperor Theodosius I. Nearby stood the Serpent Column, a relic from ancient Greece symbolizing victory, and the Walled Obelisk, a Byzantine monument that once displayed intricate decorations celebrating imperial triumphs.

Needing a recharge, we stopped for a meal at the legendary Pudding Shop, a historic hub for travelers on the old Hippie Trail, before diving into the Grand Bazaar.
