Worked as a waiter for 6 months, tried really hard to not interrupt people but my boss and coworkers would tell me I was not going to my tables often enough, so there came a point where I just didn't care if I interrupt anything. When you have to manage 9 tables at the same time, with some who want to pay, some who want to order, and some who have hot plates ready to serve, it's impossible to wait for a couple of minutes for people to finish a conversation topic before talking. And people don't want silent waiters either, maybe in upscale restaurants that exists but that's it.

Not here in Australia. No tipping here, so waiters come to the table to take your order and bring your food and that's basically it.

More restaurants should have those devices where you can pay at any time. You should not be held hostage, unable to leave, because the restaurant is busy.

This kind of thing is definitely an americanism. In Japan it startled me on day one how inattentive the waiters seemed, until it occurred to me how really they just wanted us to flag them down because for them to walk up to us would be intrusive. After that realization it was a very welcome change!

You're a waitress, not a waiter.
You're an actress, not an actor.
You are a heroine, not a hero.
You are a Landlady, not a Landlord.
You're a girl, not a guy.
etc...
