Thanks for showing this resource. I missed that part of the website. I’m near Jefferson National Forest. I do my share of dispersed camping along the Appalachian Trail since it runs close to my home. You can get solitary places even on that popular trail as long as you avoid thru-hiker peak season.

In New York they wont be within earshot of a road, but they also wont be more than two miles from a service road. The reason is so emergency vehicle can get to the location in the case of an out of control camp fire.
They will have a fire pit and flat area for a tent, and they wont be on a ridge or in a gully, within a hundred yards of a stream, river or body of water or 500 yards of private property.
